Default Is garden soil okay for indoor, potted plants (herbs)?

The genius at the Home Depot, when I asked about 2 different kinds of soil neglected to tell me one was for potting and the other for gardening, which maybe I should have known, but I am a new plant-grower : ) When I asked if one was better than the other, he said they would both work.

I do not think it should make a difference. the garden soil probably has no added fertilizer. All that matters is what the plant thinks. It may even like the garden soil better.

Generally, potting soil has some perlite added to improve the drainage. Garden soil will be heavier. Since this is new soil - you didn't just dig it up out of your yard - it may not be too bad. You might want to be extra careful not to over water - the most common cause of potted plant death. Good luck.
