Snakes are more afraid of us than we are of them. They will do their best to hide, if possible, using a strike at the last resort. Most of the time in vegetable gardens you will find a King snake or Black snake. These are non-poisonous and will eat rats, moles, etc. They are good for the environment, too. Anyway, if you want to keep the snakes out of your garden, surround it with lime The lime will burn their belly. Plus, it will help out with the soil.

Most snakes at this time of the year will hide during the daytime due to the temperature. They will most likely be burrowed under something, trying to get cool. I haven't seen any "hanging out" in any gardens lately (and I live in the South).
