Does a Pineapple grow in the ground or on a tree?

Believe it or not, but this debate has been raging between my friends and I for three days straight now and we can't seem to get to the bottom of it. Random topic of conversation, I know but then again we do tend to talk about the most obscure things....So can someone please settle this debate for us - Do pineapples grow in the ground or on trees?
