Moreton Bay Fig trees make wonderful bonsai, and are relatively easy for beginners. There are a lot of trees/shrubs that make great bonsai, Japanese maple, a lot of conifers, and there are a lot of modified fruit trees out there that make good bonsai plants like ornamental plums and cherries. A good nursery will point you in the right direction; don`t be scared to try anything though, you may be surprised! Good luck with your bonsai hobby, I hope you will find it as rewarding as I do.
