as a palm freak , I can answer that.
There are over 3700 different types of palms in the world and over 100 are purchasable. Its unclear what type you have . Most potted palms do not grow fast. Planted in the ground in warm, weather will really help the palm grow fast. If you live in a cool area outside the palm belt you would need to dig it up in the fall.
The fastest growing palms are Washingtonia Robusta
aka Mexican Fan Palm , that thing will grow fast.
If your going to keep that palm , keep it in a sunny window and dont water very often in winter. Put it out on a patio in warm weather and it should take off. Fertilize the palm lightly in warm weather with water at the same time.

FYI = many palms can be grown in the ground in almost any state . The Needle Palm is hardy to -20*f cold events and the Sabal Minor *dwarf palmetto" is another. Here in tennessee , the Trachycarpus Fortunei aka chinese WINDMILL palm is really being used.
