Default Garden watering Systems?

I have a watering system fed via a 3hp electric pump from a well in the garden, in the last year it has broken down twice after sucking up small stones. I am now thinking of changing the pump to a 5hp Honda petrol water pump. Does anybody know whether this sort of pump is capable of powering a water system?
Thanks Barrie C
