Default Good house plant?

I've never owned a plant before but I'm interested in getting a plant or two for my room. I've heard that they keep the air clean (which makes sense) and that's the main purpose it would serve for me. That said, I don't know plants at all. Can they really be beneficial to the air in your home or in a room? If so, any recommendations?

I live in Southern Louisiana if that makes a difference for house plants.

I would suggest either a peace lilly or a spider plant or maybe even both. I have both and like both. The peace lilly is so pretty when the white flower blooms. The spider plant looks so awesome when it produces "baby spiders" hanging off it.
