Default how do i keep my cats off my houseplants?

Ive got a few different houseplants, one of them is a big palm tree like 5 ft tall; its real with real dirt. My cat keeps knocking it over and chewing on its leaves. So then there's dirt all over the floor and not to mention my plant is reuined. Ive tried the spray bottle idea but they just do it once we leave the house or go to sleep. What do I do before I get rid of them?

I have the same thing in my living room as far as a plants and I have two cats. One 1 year old male and a 11 week old Feral female as well. I put big nice rocks in the pot on top every bit of the dirt. No dirt shows at all. All the rocks are different colors and are all about 3 inches big and round. I covered up every bit of dirt and it made the base really hard for them to try and knock over even if they get up in to it. Mine have totally lost interest in messing with it. They have a cat condo they would rather jump up and play on. It's not hard at all to build one of these at all and the cats LOVE to play on them. I make sure they have lots of toys attached to the condo so they never get bored. Maybe a try with the rocks would work for you just the same?
3 of my friends have done this and it works for all of them so far. Hope this helps you out? (Good luck). Nothing like having to clean up a mess of dirt on your nice carpeting daily. Been there and done it. It's not fun. Hang in there and give it a shot. It's cheap and should take care of your problem.

They're cats, they do this type of stuff.

Since he/she enjoys the plants buy the cat some of its own. Go to a pet store and ask about plants cats can get into, without the mess of dirt all over.

Also, in the meantime:

1. use deeper, heavier plant bowls.
2. ball up a couple sheets of paper and place some leaves inside. they might play with that instead, especially b/c of the noise.
3. place orange peel around or in the plant dishes/bowls to dissuade the cat, they don't like it.

hope this helps...
