Default Mold on house plants?

I've just noticed, I got two sick houseplants. One of them has a ton of little yellow brownish mushroom-like thingies everywhere growing on the soil. The other one has white fluffy mold-looking thingies all over the soil aswell, it is probably the same problem but at a less advanced stage. It's quite disgusting and disturbing. I don't have any money to go buy some sort of chemical to get rid of it.

What do I do?!
Omgygod, I just checked some other plants, and most of them got this problem aswell! Damn, what do I do?

It sounds like you have a fungus whose spores have spread to the other plants. From your description, you may have a pretty common houseplant fungus called "Leucocoprinus birnbaumii" or aka "Lepiota lutea" which is described as a yellowish/brown mushroom--just as you described it!

It is a harmless fungus that was most likely brought by the soil of one of your plants. It will not harm the plant.

The best way to get rid of it is to remove the soil from the plant down to the root all (leave it on the roots itself--don't shake it off) and replant it in fresh, sterile (should say on the bag). You may need to go through this series a few times; however not more than once ever 6-8 weeks so that you don't send your plant into shock.

You can also try just removing the first 2 inches of the soil and replacing it with fresh sterile soil first to see if this remedies the problem.

Check out the site below which features a professor who specializes in fungi and featured Lepiota lutea as his "fungi of the month". An interesting life I am sure!
