The beer thing works pretty well, but you have to keep emptying the containers, and dead slugs are nas-ty! Besides it's a waste of good beer. Try diatomaceous earth, you get it a garden center. It is composed of tiny, very sharp shells of diatoms (sea creatures) and when the slugs crawl over it, it slices their ugly bodies and they die. Sprinkle it around your plants wherever you see slugs, and it does work. You have to re-apply it after a rain.(it also works indoors for roaches, etc). It is also a good fertilizer.
And encourage toads. They are the slug eaters of your garden.
