Some people say put ground cayenne pepper down on the soil, but if he gets it on his paws and it gets in eyes it'll hurt so much that he'll claw his eyes out.
And those commercial repellents have to be reapplied after every rain and you don't want those chemicals in your garden anyway.
Basically, he doesn't see it as him pooping in your garden, he sees it as you putting plants in his toilet. So you have to make him want to find another toilet. Make it undesirable. Put some cut-up orange peels on the soil, cats dislike the smell of orange oil. Plant some marigolds around the edge of the garden, cats hate the smell and avoid it.
Also, stick some wooden toothpicks in the garden, with about half the toothpick sticking out of the soil. The little spikes won't stab him, but he won't like being pricked when walking through and will find a new bathroom.
