Default I am wanting to put a trench type thing to outline my garden area's. How do I do...

...this? Details please.? I have tried putting in the plastic border stuff and it keeps coming up and doesn't look how I want. I was thinking that maybe I could just dig around it. I'm not sure "trench" is the right word though. I just want to keep the mulch in and the grass out mainly. I don't have alot of money to spend, that's why I was thinking of doing this. Thanks so much!
