I want to start gardening...?

I want to start a little garden in our yard to give me and my 2 1/2 year old daughter something to enjoy doing together. I have never ever gardened or know anything about it. Can someone give me tips for starting one, what's the easiest things to grow, etc.?
I'm sure we won't start until next spring.
