Default Will my camellia survive and grow as a bonsai?

I was given a small camellia - about 12"/30cm tall. I have just planted it in a bonsai planter, with good bonsai potting mix, wire across the water hole and wired my little camellia in, in case the wind is strong outside. I am not sure what I need to do now. Do I just let it grow for some time. Do I need to cut off any new leaves or branches that may grow. How long would this little bush be able to stay in the pot without me having to do any thing else. Any help would be great - thank you
