You must be a very patient person to want to grow a tree from seed. First of all, stay away from fruit tree seeds. Fruit trees that produce good fruit are from grafts. Fruit seed produces an inferior tree. You can sprout acorns. I have baby oaks all over my yard just from the acorns that fall on the ground. However, after about 4 to 5 years, you might have a 4 foot oak. I think you should consider a bare root tree. It will grow faster, will not be an inferior adult. You can check out the website for the Natioanal Arbor Day Foundation. I believe it is www.arborday.org For a $15 contribution, they will send you baby trees, bushes and sometimes bulbs. They also sell tiny trees for a very cheap price. They will send you a catalog or you can go to their website for a look.

What is your garden like.Big or small. What kind of soil are you planting in.Is the garden facing south or north. Is it a warm climate or cold.you have to make a note of these facts and then ask your garden centre for advice.

I wondered the same questions. But its really different depending on where you live. I suggest e-mailing a state forestry person and asking them those questions. Its free and they know all about trees.

The time of year to plant really depends on which plant etc..Most trees are propogated from either "hard cuttings" or "soft cuttings"...feel free to e mail me from my profile asking more and I would be glad to help you out.. Even may send you some cuttings pre planted if you wish.. I have banana trees, pecans, willow, bamboo along with many others...
