Default do you know any shrubs that grow well in the shade?

the only sun this area gets is a wee bit in the early morning. i have tried heaps but no luck. they dont actually die,, (some have) they just dont grow. we fertilise, mulch and water. we have asked at the nurseries and their suggestions have yielded little success. our block is sandy as we live one street back from the beach, we have bought soil to build up the area we want to plant out.what have you had success with in similar situations? thank you, Sammi.

Maybe the problem is not just the shade. Being so close to the beach you may also be dealing with salt damage. The salt can be carried by the wind for some distance. Compare the salt-tolerant plants in the first two links below with the shade-tolerant plants in the other links to find any on both lists.

You can also attempt to brighten the area of shade by trimming the lower branches from your trees. Never cut the top branches of trees; this destroys the beauty and health of the tree. However, trimming the lower branches will allow a bit more light to filter through, and that dappled shade will improve the health of any plants below the tree.

You the know the easiest answer for you, is to take a walk around your neighbour hood and take note of the plants that are growing well and of course you fancy. Don't be shy about knocking on someones door to ask, I have done this myself and they have been only to happy to help, many have even given me a cutting, or take a pic and take to your local garden/nursery. They will be able to tell you. Although they should be able to advise you, what types are suitable.
Good Luck :-)
