Default Does anyone know of shrubs or same trees I can grow on my balcony that have...

...berries for birds??? I live in the Washington, D.C. area and in the winter birds come looking for food. I used to feed them bird seed but now my landlord said it makes too big of a mess! I love watching the birds come feed and of course, so do my cats.

I tried searching the internet but w/o sucess.
Thanks

there are books for this. look up Audubon. or visit and audubon center or nature preserve. they ALWAYS have pro-bird propagand--information all over the place.

anything that HAS berries is food for birds -- at least some kind of bird will eat it at some time of the year if the bird is there to find the berry.
Poison Ivy has berries that is food for birds in the winter! I learned that in audubon.

i just did a search for "wild bird plants" on amazon and gots lots of results. couldn't find that really good book that Audubon was pushing at me

here is some link i found on their web site

try planting pyracantha (fire thorn),ilex(hollys)and heilex (ivys) in pots on your balcony or you can buy sunflower seed which their shells remove at any pet shop or feed and seed store.

Your landlord wants the mess gone. Can't you just sweep up every day so there is no mess? I know there is a mess where I feed wild birds and I sweep it once a week. I own my house.
