Moss grows on all sides of the tree. However for purposes remember moss grows faster in dark places. In the Northern Hemisphere the Sun is always to the south. Therefore the Northern side of the tree gets the least sun and the moss grows highest there. In The Southern Hemisphere, Australia for example the opposite is true.

Yes. Moss will grow under the right conditions. As a general rule of thumb, explorers used to use this to help get a sense of general navigation direction... BUT, what about if the north side of the tree in question is shaded by another tree? Moss doesn't know direction, nor does it care. If there's a nice damp dark area for it to grow, it will grow. :-)

Only in some areas of the world. In TX it grows all oer the tree, but in Scotland, moss is found on the north side. Hope this helps.
