Default growing maple trees in melbourne in clay soil?

I'm trying to choose a tree to grow in our front yard and am considering a maple tree. We live in Newport, Melbourne and have clay soil. Spot would be sunny. I'd like it to grow to no more than 6m in diameter (height doesn't matter). I'd like red leaves in Autumn. Would it grow OK and does anyone have a suggestion regarding which species to plant.
