Default How can I find out if the fruit from the pear tree in my garden is safe to eat?

The pear tree in my garden is very old and overgrown. Up to now the fruit has been sparse and small in size. We have never eaten any of it. This year there has been a bumper crop of larger fruit. How can I find out if it is safe to eat?
