Default New place (Ho Ho) thinking to spring: What shrubs/ small trees grow well on...

...north side, Wisconsin, clayish? Maybe a little afternoon sun. Hard freeze in winter.

I asked a similar question about good native trees for clay soil a while back and was given a link to this site by missymuler. It has some good info. Links to sites with tree or shrub info are near the bottom of the page.
