Trees have to have roots and a branch won't root.

Try dipping it in some rooting hormone and planting it in a pot of soil. It would be best to use a small piece of a young branch. I don't know if this will work, but it is worth a try.

Grafting is the best way to propagate a cherry. You might be able to grow one from a cutting if you use a rooting hormone.

To the question of ; if you can take a cutting from your cherry tree. The answer is yes!. You do not inform us if you are talking about the flowering or fruiting varieties. The secret of taking these type of cuttings is to use one of two ways. One is of Grafting which is quite technical and takes some time, for results.the other is of taking a small green (2nd wood growth tip about 4 to 6 ins in length) when the sap is not flowing and using hormone powder on the cut end. Placing it in sharp sand / soil mixture to take root.
You can actually get information and guidance with this from the RHS web site and be able to down load what you need from it, and ask them for assistance. Wish you well on the project.
