Default what are the best kinds of apple trees to plant in southern Minnesota?

I have some land in Leroy, MN and I'd like to plant between 40 and 50 trees

Check with an orchard in your area. There are two at least in Rochester, and one in LaCrescent.
If you have land on a hill, they seem to do better there (the air I guess).

Ditto on the earlier answer of checking locally - also check to see what's selling (where the Farmer's Markets are), and consider planting some that you like as well. You shouldn't plant all one variety, for pollination as well as for sales.
