palms can tolerate shade but do better if they get some sun every day. Don't overwater, get a meter to check the soil moisture. and only water it when it is semi-dry. Or you can just find some wooden skewers to stick into the soil to check for moisture. YOu want it to be fairly dry before you water it. Clean the fronds weekly with a spray bottle filled with water and drench them and them wipe it gently with a soft cloth .You can buy leaf shine products to make it look gorgeous. Don't fertilize at all in the winter. They don't need alot of fertilizer in the fall and winter. Give it half strength now and then don't give it any more food until early spring. It is very important not to overwater as the leaves will turn yellow and it will get root rot and decline very fast .. Good Luck YOu can e-mail me if you need more advice. I took care of plants in busineses for a long time, malls, doctors offices, restaurants and they are not easy to maintain even in the best of conditions but are worth it as they are beautiful, as are plants to me. As for the cat prob LOL you will have to get advice from a pet expert there

cats are a problem, they pee in it. i took sharp chopsticks and put them in the soil like pungie sticks, seems to work, but they are determand to get in there so put them in tighly and plenty of them. also dont over water, the soil needs to dry out as much as it needs water. hot forced air is a killer, so put a large tray w/ rocks in it w/ water so it will mosterize the plant without rotting the roots. it may look close to death by late winter, but will come back itn the spring.
