Default What type of tree have I got in my garden?

I have a large tree in the garden. I was told it was a cherry tree then a copper beech now someone said it's a plum tree. It has pink and white blossom in march(ish) then has a dark purply leaf but has never produced any fruit. The bark isn't smooth like a copper beech and it is dark in colour. The tree is at least 20ft high and has a thick wide canopy. It is spectacular and I'd love to know what it is. Hope this is enough info. Thank you
Thanks for answers so far - PS all the leaves fall off in the winter
Thanks to gardengirl for such a detailed answer. I'm not sure how to use this site properly yet so have had to put comments here. The markings on the bark though don't go across it. There are only a few markings on the bark which make the bark look corky but they run down the bark as opposed to across it at the bottom of the tree. The tree then splits into two large branches about 4-5 feet up. It does look like the pictures you sent though.
