I'm looking for creative ideas that are inexpensive, easy to build or make and looks good.

I think this would depend on the size of your patio and what look your going for. If you have the space I would suggest any large containers that make a statement such - urns, wagons, barrels, tubs, etc...
Note: If you choose a container that doesn't have holes in the bottom then add the holes yourself. This aids in draining so the roots don't drown.

You can use old watering cans or put a plant inside a nice wicker basket. This really looks great.
