I used to play that game and I've got three or four different fruits in town. To get a coconut tree, you must find a coconut. There will be one wash up on the beach shore from time to time. Pick it up, and plant it. The best thing to do is to plant it by the shoreline itself, right by the waters edge. They should grow if you plant them there, I have about six fully grown coconut tree's. I love 'em, there are a few certain beetles you cannot catch without them. And let me tell you, once you have coconut tree's, you'll start getting much more money. The beetles you find on these tree's appear often, and sell for 6,000-12,000 bells! Also the coconut's themselves sell for 500 bells each.
To get any other kind of fruit tree: there are three ways that I know of. The easiest way is by mailing your resident fruit to all the villagers in town. Not saying that they will send you a different fruit, but it is possible. Usually it's furniture or something. I just got alot of fruit by going to other peoples towns. You can do this by finding a friend with a DS and an Animal Crossing game. Go talk to copper and he'll let you out. When you get to their town, pick as much fruit as you like, and when you get back, plant it in your town. The next day, you'll have fruit tree's everywhere! Another way is by shooting the baloons with gifts in the sky with your slingshot. Sometimes they will contain foreign fruit.
