Default I want to build a vegetable patch in my garden.............?

I am going to have someone build me a wooden or stone vegetable patch running along the length of my garden and i have a couple of questions:
- Someone told me that if i have it built out of wood then it will eventually rot - is this the case and is stone therefore better?
- What size would you recommend - i dont want it to take over the garden and was thinking having it just under a metre tall and about 45 cm wide and about 2 or 3 metres in length. would thi be large enough to grow things such as peppers, onions, cabbage, brocolli, asparagus etc??
